Clinical Interests

Ted Wun's clinical interests are malignant and non-malignant hematology and he maintains an active clinical practice. His primary areas of research have been in the pathophysiology and complications of sickle cell disease (SCD) and the epidemiology of venous thromboembolism with focus on cancer-associated thrombosis.

He and his colleagues demonstrated significant platelet and leukocyte activation in SCD and described platelet-erythrocyte aggregates in these patients. He has participated in several multi-center therapeutic trials in SCD and is the former Chair of the Sickle Cell Disease Advisory Committee of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

He is presently co-PI on an NHLBI R21 determining the incidence of cancers in patients with SCD, and UC Davis PI for a HRSA funded SCD treatment demonstration project and the NHLBI funded SCD Implementation Consortium. Over the last decade he and colleagues at UC Davis have extensively described the epidemiology of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with a variety of cancers. This widely cited work has identified certain cancer types and predictive factors associated with a high risk of symptomatic VTE and informed large prophylactic trials. More recently he founded the Center for Oncology Hematology Outcomes Research and Training (COHORT) with the goal of using innovative and robust epidemiological methods and large datasets to determine outcomes in hematological and oncological diseases with a focus on long term complications and health  outcomes disparities.

In his role as associate dean for research in the School of Medicine, Wun is responsible for expanding the breadth and depth of research at the health system, as well as implementing the health system's 2017 Strategic Plan to increase innovative research.
