A team of UC Davis Health researchers, led by pioneering fetal surgeon Diana Farmer, M.D., and bioengineer Aijun Wang, Ph.D., has been awarded nearly $15 million for groundbreaking work on a spina bifida treatment by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and Shriners Children’s. The funding will allow the team to carry out phase 2 of the CuRe Trial (Cellular Therapy for In Utero Repair of Myelomeningocele) that tests the first stem cell treatment for the birth defect.
Black women in the United States experience disproportionately worse maternal health outcomes than all other racial groups, which further negatively impacts Black women with sickle cell disease. Published in the American Journal of Hematology, UC Davis Health researchers co-authored the study alongside Stanford and UCSF.
In the largest study of its kind, researchers at UC Davis Health found that exposure to organophosphate ester flame retardants during pregnancy was associated with preterm birth, especially among female newborns. The chemicals were also linked to higher birth weight, a concern for increased obesity risk. The major research study was published in Environmental Health Perspectives.
